"Interested in sophisticated fun? You, hubby, girl friends. The more the merrier. Get in touch with Kirby, through WASTE only, Box 7391"
Now, Oedipa thought it might be something sexual, "but she somehow doubted it." She then mentions how she dislikes hieroglyphics.
So what does this Hieroglyphic mean? First off: What is a Hieroglyphic?
Hieroglyphic: letters or symbols that are written or imprinted on a surface to represent the sounds or words of a language.
So the symbol on the page (or in the book, on the bathroom wall) has a significant meaning to it. Off course this book can't be taken completely serious, so does it have a significance?
Also does WASTE stand for something? It can't just mean garbage, can it? Interesting, truly interesting. Is this where the real story begins? Does the Secret Mailing system have anything to do with it.
We shall see.
